Terms of use

The agreement between you and Vima: what the service is, what it is not, and the rules for using it.

About these terms

Vima, at vimaplan.com, is a free degree planner for Rice University students. It is run by Antreas Leonidou, an individual based in Cyprus (“we” and “us” in these terms). These terms are the agreement between you and him.

By signing in or using Vima you agree to these terms and to the Privacy policy, which explains what we keep about you and why. If you do not agree, please do not use Vima.

What Vima is

Vima is a planning aid. It is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Rice University; Rice is named only to say whose catalog Vima follows.

The courses and degree requirements in Vima come from Rice’s public General Announcements and are for planning only. They may contain mistakes or lag behind changes, and the checks Vima runs are not an official degree audit. The General Announcements, Degree Works and your advisor are the authority on what you need to graduate; check your plan with them before you register. Auto-fill only proposes courses; you decide what to keep.

Who can use it

  • Vima is for university students. You must be at least 16 to use it.
  • You sign in with a Google account. Keep that account secure: what is done through your Vima account is your responsibility.
  • An account is for one person. Do not share it.

Your plan

Your plan is yours. By saving it you let us store it and show it back to you on your devices, only to run Vima. You can export it at any time (in the planner, More actions, then Export) and ask us to delete it, with the rest of your account, by writing from the address you sign in with. You are responsible for what you write in your notes; please keep sensitive information out of them.

Fair use

Use Vima to plan your own studies. Do not:

  • scrape, bulk download or redistribute the catalog data or the planner, in whole or in part, whether by hand or with automated tools
  • use bots, scripts or other automated means to reach Vima, other than an ordinary web browser
  • try to reach other people’s data, get around rate limits or security, or overload the service
  • use Vima to break the law or anyone’s rights, or pretend to be someone else

What belongs to whom

Vima’s software, design and name, and the way it organises and checks the catalog, belong to Antreas Leonidou. The course and requirement text comes from Rice’s General Announcements and remains Rice’s. We give you a personal, non-transferable permission to use Vima to plan your own studies; nothing else is licensed to you.

If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them to improve Vima without owing you anything for them.

Closing accounts and changes to the service

  • You can stop using Vima at any time and ask us to delete your account.
  • We can suspend or close accounts that abuse the service or break these terms, and delete what is stored in them. Where we can, we will tell you why.
  • Vima is free. If that ever changes, we will tell you first, and nothing will be charged without your agreement.
  • We may change or stop Vima. If we stop it, we will announce it on the site in advance when we can, so you have time to export your plan.

No warranty

Vima is provided free, “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no promises about it, express or implied, including that it is accurate, complete, up to date, fit for a particular purpose or always available. Some places do not allow these exclusions, so some of them may not apply to you.

Limits on our liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for anything that follows from relying on a plan, such as a missed requirement, an extra semester or a registration problem. Our total liability to you for anything to do with Vima is limited to US$20.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or, for consumers in the EU and the UK, for harm caused intentionally or by gross negligence.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of Cyprus, and disputes about them go to the courts of Cyprus. If you are a consumer in the EU, the UK or anywhere else whose law gives you protections that an agreement cannot take away, you keep those protections, and you can also bring a claim in the courts where you live.

Changes to these terms

When we change these terms, we post the new version on this page with a new date at the top, and if the change is significant we say what changed. Using Vima after a change means you accept the new terms; if you do not, stop using it and ask us to delete your account.

General

If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later. You cannot transfer these terms to anyone else; we can transfer them to whoever takes over running Vima, who must keep to them and to the Privacy policy. These terms and the Privacy policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Vima.
